Ice & Water Shield Membrane

Self-adhering ice and water shield membrane is a waterproofing layer installed at roof edges, valleys, and other vulnerable points before the primary roofing material goes down. It bonds directly to the deck, sealing around nail penetrations and standing up to the freeze-thaw cycles that make Chicago roofs prone to ice damming in winter.

Where It Matters Most

  • Roof Edges & Eaves — The first place melting snow refreezes and backs up under shingles or membrane.
  • Valleys — Where water volume concentrates during rain or rapid snowmelt.
  • Flashing Transitions — Around chimneys, skylights, and walls where materials meet and small gaps can let water in.

Working Alongside Other Systems

Ice and water shield membrane is often installed in coordination with flashing and scupper systems, which manage where water exits the roof, and with tuckpointing and mortar repairs on parapet walls and chimneys, since deteriorated masonry nearby can undermine even a well-sealed membrane. During winter months, this membrane also complements snow and ice removal equipment used to relieve heavy roof loads before they stress the seal.
